Meet SdruZeny, the Czech feminist group fighting for equality

Prague, Czech Republic – In Brno, Czech feminist collective SdruZeny has been rallying for gender equality for five years with its anniversary falling on International Women’s Day (IWD) this Tuesday. The group of about 20 permanent members plans to celebrate this year’s holiday with a night march to “reclaim” the streets and public space of the second biggest city in the Czech Republic. Kafkadesk caught up with two members of the group ahead of the event.

Polish abortion protests go global

WARSAW (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters in cities around the world have gathered over the past days in support of Poles who have taken to the streets after a court ruling further limited the country’s restrictive abortion laws. In the week since the Constitutional Tribunal announced the ruling, those expressing solidarity with Polish protesters in Oslo, London, Chicago, Glasgow, Brussels and elsewhere have gathered in front of Polish Embassies and in their city centres.

"As I walk the streets of Prague, it all seems jolly. Czech flags are decorating the baroque houses, I can see flyers celebrating 30 years of freedom on every corner and people wear pins with Havel’s face. But underneath all the pride and three-coloured badges, it is obvious that Prague is unwell. The city is divided between the pro-West young generation and melancholic citizens nostalgically dreaming of communism."
